Most people including you and me normally shed 50 to 100 strands of hair in a day. This is completely normal for us and doesn’t cause thinning of scalp hair. This is for the simple reason that new hair is always growing up there to take the place of the fallen. Cool isn’t it?
But this is not true or cool for a lot of us. There are many people around us who currently suffer from hair loss. This occurs when our cycle of hair growth and shedding gets disrupted. One might also suffer from hair loss when the hair follicle gets destroyed and then gets replaced with scar tissue.
Causes of Hair Loss
Family History or Heredity
This is the most common cause of hair loss. The condition is called male-pattern baldness in case of men or female-pattern baldness in case of women. It occurs gradually and mostly in predictable patterns. Main symptoms are a receding hairline and visible bald spots in men and unusually thinning hair in women.
Hormonal changes and imbalances in the body may cause temporary hair loss. After pregnancy hair loss is common. It may also occur on or after childbirth or during or at the onset of menopause. Our hormone levels are also majorly affected by the thyroid gland.
Patchy Hair Loss
This is called alopecia areata and is a type of non-scarring hair loss which occurs when our immune system attacks hair follicles. This results in sudden hair loss leaving behind smooth, round bald patches on your skin.
Ringworm infection can invade your hair and scalp skin which leads to scaly patches and hair loss.
This condition is called trichotillomania in medical terms and causes people to pull out their hair.
Hair loss may also be a result of drugs or medications used for:
- Heart problems
- High blood pressure
- Birth control
- Intake of too much vitamin A causes hair loss too
Other Causes of Hair Loss
- Radiation therapy to the head
- A trigger event such as a physical or emotional shock results in temporary hair loss
- Certain hairstyles and treatments. Excessive hairstyling or exposure to chemicals, hair colours and cosmetic products also damage your hair. This can also cause inflammation and scarring which may result in permanent hair loss.

Panchakarma Treatment for Hair Loss
This therapy is used for patients where the above mentioned have failed to deliver favourable results. Ayurveda explains hair fall as one among the Kapalagata Rogas. Some people experience less hair loss while some many suffer from drastic hair loss making this essentially cosmetic disorder a psychological one.
Thus, enter Prachana karma. This is one of the types of rakta mokshana procedures carried on in Ayurveda. In this treatment surgical instruments are used to make multiple punctures or cuts on the scalp so that the vitiated blood oozes out and the dosha can be balanced. This procedure is performed and recommended only for those patients who are strong enough to bear the treatment. As the diseased blood oozes out from the affected area, the doshas are expelled out of the body and the disease is cured.
All diseases in our body that are due to vitiated blood, such as localized skin diseases, glandular enlargement, itching, skin inflammation and redness of skin disorders and edema also get cured.
Although you would say that various other treatments are available to treat hair fall such as topical hair and scalp preparation, also hair transplant surgeries which are very common these days. There is one major drawback to these surgeries that they cause permanent tissue atrophy and denaturing of cellular elements. Prachanna Karma on the other hand is counted as one among the Shastrakrita Raktamokshanas which is free of such side effects and post surgery traumas. The multiple small incisions made here work to detoxify the impure blood and facilitate re-growth and treatment of hair fall. It further helps strengthen the weakened hair roots, rescues damaged hairs, prevents hairline from receding, and stimulates and nourishes the hair follicles. This initiates hair growth with absolutely no risk of irritation and allergies.
