Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) refers to multiple repetition of a particular behavior. An obsession is defined as the repeated unwanted thought or urge whereas a compulsion is defined as the repetitive activity that one feels to do. It is a mental health condition where an individual has obsessive musings and compulsive conduct. With OCD, one feels that the obsessions are not reasonable and try to ignore or stop them. This then increases the distress and anxiety.

OCD often begins in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. It can destroy a person’s capacity to function properly at work or even lead a comfortable existence in the home.

CAUSES

  • Organic, hereditary and ecological factors
  • Due to certain bacterial contaminations like that in streptococcal infection
  • Due to head damage
  • Trauma
  • Lack of serotonin level
  • Weak immune system

SYMPTOMS

  • Feeling of compelling strain and trouble
  • Anxiety
  • Repeated unwanted ideas

  • Aggressive impulses
  • Persistent sexual thoughts

In Ayurveda, OCD is related with the Atatva Abhinivesha. Atatva Abhinivesha is mainly caused due to vata dosha imbalance. Vata dosha gets aggravated due to intake of polluted food and beverages, suppression of natural urges, excess intake of cold and warm unctuous and dry eatables irrespective of combinations and fearful situations. In individuals with poor mental ability, vitiated vata dosha combines with the raja and tama dosha and thereafter resides in the hridya vitiating mana and buddhi. As a result the mind gets weakened and the person loses the ability to recognize good and bad, wholesome and unwholesome, truth and myth. When such condition persists for a longer period of time, this is known as Obsessive compulsive disorder.

  2. Curbing aggravated prana vayu and increasing the satva guna
  3. Administrating Rasayana Oushadis
  4. Intake of wholesome food and habits
  5. Practicing meditation, yoga and pranayama

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

  • Have atleast 7-8 hours sleep. This helps in relaxing the mind. A calm mind helps to relieve anxiety and stress.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol intake and drug use.
  • Practice yoga, meditation and do pranayama.
  • Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products in your diet
  • Avoid intake of caffeinated products like tea, coffee and chocolates.
  • Practice deep breathing and other relaxation techniques
  • Have warm baths to relax the mind and body.

HERBAL REMEDIES

  • Soak 10-15 almonds in the night. Blanche and grind them to prepare a fine paste. Heat two teaspoons of pure ghee and roast the paste in it for five minutes. Add some sugar to this and eat it every day. Almonds help in nourishing the brain and maintain the health of the nervous system.
  • Eat some walnuts in the early morning as walnuts are rich in essential fatty acids that corrects the imbalance in the brain. Walnuts are rich in magnesium and calcium that help in relaxing the muscles of the brain and improve its functions.
  • Soak three teaspoons of poppy seeds overnight. In the morning grind them to a fine paste and eat. Poppy seeds relax the mind, relieves depression, enhances the thought processes, nourishes the mind and body by promoting sound sleep.
