Diverticulitis is a disease that occurs when small pouches in the colon bulge outward and become infected or inflamed. These pouches are called diverticula and the condition of the formation of diverticula is known as diverticulitis or diverticulosis.

This disease is mainly common in developed countries where people consume low-fibre diet. The incidence of disease increases with the age. It is common after the age of 40. Some patients also develop bleeding, rupture and infection due to this disease.

Diverticulitis can lead to infections, perforations or tears, blockages and sometimes bleeding.


The main cause of diverticulitis is the formation of high pressure on the walls of the colon from inside. When a person consumes a low fibre diet, the colon has to exert more pressure than the usual to move small, hard stool. Exertion of more pressure on the walls ultimately leads to the formation of diverticula and the condition diverticulitis.


  • Abdominal pain

  • Painful rectal bleeding
  • Difficulty in passing stools
  • Collection of pus in the pelvis

  • Sudden severe pain in the lower left side of the abdomen


  • People who have a present history of smoking
  • Those consuming low fibre diet
  • People who have advancing age

  • Males are at higher risk of developing diverticulitis
  • Those who are physically inactive
  • Those who have family history of diverticular disease
  • Those consuming high fat diet
  • Those who have a past medical history of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.


According to Ayurveda, diverticulitis is a sign of vitiated vata dosha in the body. Due to improper digestion of the food in the body or improper elimination of the waste, the toxins get accumulated in the body and ultimately leads to the imbalance of vata dosha along with other doshas in the body.

Single herbs beneficial in diverticulitis are:

  • Aloe vera
  • Amalaki
  • Licourice
  • Flax seeds
  • Marshmallow
  • Wild yam

Ayurvedic formulations recommended in diverticulitis are:

  • Agnitundi Vati
  • Triphala Churna
  • Hingvadi Vati
  • Chitrakadi Vati
  • Shivakshara Paachan Churna
  • Agnimukha Churna
  • Trikatu Churna


  • Take in high fibre diet to prevent constipation.
  • Avoid nuts, corn and seeds to prevent diverticulitis.
  • Take enough water in your diet. Drink 7-8 glasses of water per day.
  • Take enough rest.
  • Avoid taking in foods that cannot be digested quickly.
  • Consume fruits, vegetables, cereals and whole grain bread.
  • Avoid straining during bowel movements.
  • Avoid taking in fruits and vegetables that are extremely cold or hot.
  • Eat seedless grapes, peaches, lettuce and carrot that add bulk to the stools.
  • Include barley, lemon, oats, peaches, tapioca, ghee, okra in your diet. A diet rich in these types of food help re-balance the aggravated doshas in diverticulitis.
  • Avoid the consumption of alcohol.
  • Avoid smoking as it irritates the gastric mucosa.
  • Chew food slowly and thoroughly
  • Have a normal bowel routine. Perform the bowel movement at the same time every day.
  • Practice yoga and excercises for about an hour. The stomach muscles can be toned and strengthened with the help of regular exercise and it can also promote digestion.


  • Papaya is good for people suffering from diverticulitis.
  • Eating raw garlic and clove are highly beneficial in diverticulitis. These should be eaten raw and three times a day.
  • Brown rice, rich in fibre content, helps in curing the spasms and inflammation of colon.
  • Potatoes have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties due to which they can be used in diverticulitis. However, fried potatoes should be avoided as they can worsen the condition.
  • Powdered barley grass juice contains abundant vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, proteins, active enzymes that are beneficial in diverticulitis.
