Prostatitis is defined as the inflammation of the prostate gland. Prostate is a small walnut sized organ in men, located at the base of the bladder, surrounding the urinary passage called urethra. The average volume of a normal prostate gland is 15-30c.c. In case of prostate cancer or prostatitis, this volume may be exceptionally increased.

It is a disease that mainly affects males. Approximately 40% of urinary system related problems are caused due to prostatitis. Though it can affect males at any age, elderly men have been found to commonly complaint of prostatitis.

Acute prostatitis is caused due to bacterial infection and may prove to be fatal as it may result in the spread of infection to the whole body. Chronic form of prostatitis is not caused by bacterial infection. It occurs as a result of a long standing inflammation of the prostate gland which may or may not be a result of some bacterial infection. The patient may experience inflammation, pain, discomfort and urinary difficulties.

  • Eating too much bitter and pungent foods
  • Drinking too much alcohol or caffeine
  • Holding the urge for urination for long hours
  • Not eating enough of the foods and spices that can purify the urine

  • Frequent urination in the night
  • Painful urination
  • Difficulty in urination
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Loss of libido
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Increased urinary frequency with urgency


As per Ayurveda, it is compared with Mutrakruchhra. It is caused due to intake of substances that increase heat, food or climate that increases dryness in the body, excessive consumption of alcohol, excessive exertion, excessive food intake and indigestion.

Four types of Mutrakruchhra have been described in Ayurveda:-

  1. Vataj Mutrakruchhra is caused due to vitiation of vata dosha. It is marked by severe pain in the pelvic region and obstruction in the urination.
  2. Pittaja Mutrakruchhra is caused due to vitiation of pitta dosha. Severe burning micturition with reddish or yellowish colouration is the commonest symptom of this type.
  3. Kaphaja Mutrakruchhra is caused due to vitiation of the kapha dosha. Swelling and heaviness in the pelvic region along with sticky urine is the characteristic feature of this type.
  4. Sannipatik Mutrakrucchra is caused due to vitiation of all the three doshas. Mixed features of all the doshas are seen in this type.

Ayurvedic treatment in this case emphasizes on:-

  1. Internal detoxification to remove the infection in the urinary tract
  2. Cleaning and removing any kind of blockage in the urinary tract
  3. Normalizing the function of the apana vayu
  4. Toning up the functioning of the kidneys

  • Gokshura

  • Eat healthy food in order to build a strong immune system.
  • Do not hold the urge to urinate. This way the bacteria will not get enough time to stay inside the system and multiply.
  • Avoid constipation causing food items. Hard stools irritate the inflamed prostate gland and cause a lot of pain to the patient.
  • Exercise regularly and sleep well.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, citrus fruits, spicy peppers, fried foods, junk foods and other foods that irritate the gland.
  • Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.


  • Have turmeric in your diet. The Curcumin content of the turmeric possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that make it useful in managing chronic prostatitis.
  • Include pumpkin seeds in your diet. Pumpkin seeds are excellent for prostatitis as they contain high amounts of unsaturated fatty acids and are also rich in minerals.
  • Have carrot juice and spinach juice in your diet. These are highly useful in case of prostatitis.
