Ringworm, Dermatophytosis, Tinea

Ringworm (Dermatophytosis, Tinea) is a common skin disease caused by fungal growth on the skin. It is a contagious condition. Due to bursting of exterior through the skin leads to circular or different shaped skin patches with itching. The patches are sharp marginated with raised edges and are generally single.

Scratching spreads the infection to other parts of the body. It spreads through contact of utilizing articles of infected people. Risk of ringworm increases in warm and humid conditions or if one has the weak immune system.

CAUSES

  • Poor nutrition
  • Low immunity
  • Hot and humid climate
  • Chronic diseases that compromises immunity
  • Poor hygiene and living conditions
  • Diabetic patients are more prone to develop skin diseases
  • Intake of corticosteroids and immune suppressing agents

SYMPTOMS

  • Round or oval patches with sharp margins and raised edges
  • Appearance of red rash in the form of a ring on the skin
  • Severe Itching and cracked skin in between the toes, groin, thigh skin folds or anus
  • Appearance of bald spots on scalp
  • Discoloration of nails
  • Abnormally dark or light skin
  • Peeling off the skin

According to Ayurveda, Tinea infection is included in kshudra roga and is compared with dadru. It is caused due to pitta and kapha imbalance. Intake of incompatible food items, intake of excess sea food, heavy food intake, intake of sour curd and milk together in excess, intake of black gram causes vitiation of the doshas and hence the development of dadru.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

  • Do not walk barefoot in soil and other dirty areas.
  • Regularly wash the floors with antiseptic solutions where you walk bare foot.
  • Instead of synthetic, wear cotton and loose fitting clothes to help moisture move away from your skin.
  • Dry the skin thoroughly after washing especially between the toes and within skin folds.
  • Do not share the towels and other utilities of the person suffering from tinea infection.
  • Avoid eating oily, heavy, and excessive and junk foods as these food stuffs upset the stomach and intestines.
  • Have easy digestible food.
  • Include turmeric, cinnamon, and cardamom and curry leaves in your diet as these help in maintaining healthy skin.
  • Do regular exercises as it supports healthy immune system of our body and hence helps our body to fight against infections.

HERBAL REMEDIES

  • Crush some basil leaves. Press the paste on a sieve and extract the juice. Take two teaspoons of this juice. Apply on the infected area with the help of the cotton.
  • Take one teaspoon of crushed mustard seeds and add little water to make the paste. Apply the paste on the affected area and wash after an hour with lukewarm water.
  • Separate the seeds from the papaya and dry them in the sun for 4-5 hrs. Crush the dried seeds and add little water to make the paste. Apply the paste on the infected area. Do this two to three times a day.
  • Mix a tablespoon of khadira in a tub of hot water and use it for bathing.
  • Mix 10 grams of turmeric in 100 ml of neem oil. Apply this over the skin lesions half an hour before bath.
  • Tulsi having anti-bacterial properties is good for ringworm infection. Take 10 fresh leaves of holy basil and crush them to extract the juice. Mix a pinch of neem or turmeric powder to this and apply over the affected area.
